Northern Queensland lies south of the Far Northern Region, its largest urban centre is in Townsville which has a population of more than 230,000.
Charters Towers is also in the region as well as the coastal towns of Ayr, Home Hill and Ingham.
There is no official boundary for this region, although Townsville is referred to as the ‘unofficial capital’.
Townsville is adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef and is Australia’s largest urban centre north of the Sunshine Coast.
Attractions throughout Townsville and the North include tropical beaches, native flora and fauna to the Great Barrier Reef and the Museum of Tropical Queensland in Cairns.
