New General Manager for Southern Cross Care WA

Southern Cross Care (WA) Inc. (SCC), one of the largest and leading aged care providers in WA today announced that Chief Property Officer, Ms Rita Sheridan has been promoted to General Manager of Property.

Ms Sheridan has managed the Projects and Asset Management team since 2007. She held the responsibility for the SCC Property portfolio which included developments, sales and asset management.


New South Wales Provider Wins ‘Most Outstanding Specialised Business’ Award

New South Wales aged care provider Huntingdon Gardens has won the “most outstanding specialised business” category in the St George Business Awards for 2013.

The Bexley-based provider was judged over two stages and won against 80 nominated businesses. The first stage involved the community voting among the 80 nominees and the top five were then chosen to participate in stage two.


Resthaven Mount Gambier reaches 100 Employees

Resthaven Mount Gambier has reached 100 employees and 20 volunteers after only two years in operation at the residential aged care facility in Mount Gambier.

The $24 million aged care facility opened in July, 2011 and is now close to capacity with 88 residents. ‘There was a real need for aged care and accommodation in the area,’ said Resthaven Mount Gambier Manager, Pam Alde.


iPhone Device Could Prevent Strokes

Researchers at the University of Sydney have developed an iPhone app and case which measures heart rhythm, and may help aged care workers across the country to prevent strokes and heart problems in residents. Senior author of the study and Professor of Cardiology at Concord Hospital and the University of Sydney Ben Freedman, said he believed that the device and application would help those who work in aged care.


Aboriginal Care Leader Wins Employee of the Year Award

It has been annonced that the Leading Age Services Australia (LASA) Victoria 'Employee of the Year' is Graham Custance  - for his work with the Aboriginal Community.

The award was presented to Mr Custance by Business Development Manager from First State Super, Tody Cuda, at Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse.

A free workshop for after-hours provider,s including GPs and residential aged care workers to teach strategies for engaging with individuals with low English proficiency is available from the Centre for Culture, Ethnicity and Health.

The training is open to GPs, residential aged care providers, nurses, practice managers and reception staff to help them develop skills and strategies to communicate effectively with low English proficiency patients.

Regis Aged Care’s Graduate Nurse Program will open from August 1, to assist students currently completing their Bachelor of Nursing to make a smooth transition into the work environment. The program is in its third year and places are being offered in Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland.
