Dementia Action Week Recognised at Regis Aged Care

on Wednesday, October 2, 2019

Most of us know someone who is living with dementia directly or indirectly, yet many people in the community know little about Dementia or how to help.  Partnering with Dementia Australia, Dementia Week in September is a good time to recognise the exceptional work done every day by Regis Aged Care's team members. Regis is at the forefront of delivering innovative dementia care across all their homes.

Regis recently launched café sessions called ‘Esprit Café’ across all their aged care homes. A trained social worker provides the opportunity for both existing and former family members, as well as local community, to come and share their experiences in caring for loved ones going through (or having been through) the ageing process.

Over the two years this program has been operating it has had overwhelming positive feedback; foremost that loved ones benefit from connecting with others in similar situations.

In some of Regis Aged Care's homes, passionate Dementia Liaison Specialists have been introduced. They work with residents and their families to guide them through the admissions process and in building a care program that underpins the resident’s unique wants and needs. Dementia Liaison Specialists also facilitate regular sessions in which Regis partners with external partners, delivering education and support to family and loved ones.

Regis Aged Care undersdtands that caring for someone with Dementia takes compassion and care and, on a day to day basis, it’s the collective focus on the resident that achieves this.

From the Care, Lifestyle and Catering teams to the Maintenance, Allied Health or Housekeeping team; each plays a role.

Using innovations such as PARO (therapeutic seal) , Art Therapy, Music Memories or applying the Regis ‘Knowing is Caring’ principles to optimise care outcomes, all are central to achieving the best possible well being for Regis residents.

Regis Managing Director and CEO Linda Mellors said Regis facilities are dedicated to providing the best care for all residents.

“We are constantly aiming to improve the quality of care and are always looking at new initiatives to enhance our Dementia Care Model,” she said.

Dr Mellors said she is proud of Regis’ focus on dementia and looks forward to increased awareness and acceptance of dementia in the community.
