Indian Independence Day Celebrated at Mercy Place Mont Clare

on Thursday, August 15, 2019

Variety is the spice of life, so they say, and culinary variety is certainly something that seniors at Mercy Place Mont Clare are experiencing thanks to an innovative program at the not-for-profit aged care home which sees the traditional foods of different countries sampled throughout the year.

And this month Indian Independence Day is being celebrated at the Claremont-based home, with kitchen staff preparing a range of traditional Indian food, which will be served by members of the Mont Clare team who originate from India, all while they’re dressed in traditional saris.

Mercy Place Mont Clare Service Manager, Joan Lowney, says in many ways, the kitchen is the heart of the home and the kitchen staff at Mont Clare prided themselves on cooking home cooked fresh, nutritious food for residents every day.

“We pride ourselves on the nourishing and healthy food we prepare at Mercy Place Mont Clare, and adding these traditional home-cooked meals which have been lovingly prepared by our kitchen staff as part of international celebrations have been a fun and interesting addition to our menu,” she says.

“Our staff love that we are celebrating Indian Independence Day and have really embraced the initiative, and we’ve found it to be a really wonderful way of building our little community here at Mercy Place Mont Clare, as staff and residents eat these traditional meals together.

“Our residents have all been open to trying different foods, and it’s been heart-warming to see the pleasure on their faces as they’ve sampled different tastes and flavours, sometimes for the first time.”
