Bruce, Bingo and Big Smiles at BaptistCare

on Monday, June 17, 2019

Wagga local, Bruce Elam, shared his volunteering story during a recent visit to BaptistCare Caloola.

The joy he receives from helping others and bringing a smile to someone’s face, is a gift he encourages others to share.

“I was looking for a way to help out in my local area and I wanted to give back to the community. When I learned about the need for volunteers at BaptistCare Caloola, I signed up right away,” Bruce said.

“The staff are very pleasant, with the added bonus that Caloola is close to home for me.”

Bruce volunteers on Fridays and weekends and enjoys spending time with the residents, interacting with them to provide both emotional support and social connection.

“As soon as I arrive in the morning, I make myself available to help with whatever they may need. I will sit and chat with residents or take them for walks out in the garden to enjoy some sunshine, fresh air and some birdsong,” he shared.

“The staff at Caloola are amazing, especially Pam and Tracey, the main activity officers. Their dedication in caring for residents is an inspiration. I will help them however I can. I play bingo with the residents and help with the Men’s Shed in the afternoon. The day is busy and there is always a lot of walking!”

Bruce’s skills are appreciated across the aged care centre by the residents, their families and staff alike. Rhonda Clouten, Lifestyle Coordinator at BaptistCare Caloola, is a big fan of Bruce.

“Bruce is a fantastic support to our activity program and is always keen to get involved wherever he is needed. The residents’ faces light up when he is around. He has such a great way with people and we are thankful that he is able to share his time with us,” Rhonda said.

Volunteering feels good, brings purpose and allows Bruce to give back to the community he loves.

“I encourage others to volunteer. It’s such a rewarding thing to do not only are you helping out the staff, but you are giving something back to the community. Every time I visit is a highlight for me. I enjoy the relationships I have with the residents and seeing the smile on their faces when they have someone to visit and talk to them. I feel so good when I’ve spent a day at the centre,” Bruce shared.
