Julie celebrates 50 years of nursing on International Nurses Day

on the Friday, May 10, 2019

As we celebrate International Nurses Day on 12 May, we also congratulate Resthaven Clinical Nurse Workforce Development, Julie Tansing, on her milestone 50 years of nursing.

"Julie is a fine example of the many hundreds of amazing nurses employed by Resthaven, who work together with older people to support them in their individual wellness goals," says Richard Hearn, Resthaven Chief Executive Officer.

For Julie, it has been a long and rewarding career, beginning at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in 1969.

"This is where I started, completing my three year training period. After that, I became what was then known as a “staff nurse” – now it’s known as the graduate year," says Julie.

"This was followed by a year of Midwifery training at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne."

"Returning to the QEH, I worked in several different areas, including the renal and dialysis unit, Cardiac ICU, and the early days of IVF programs."

"When my young family necessitated fewer working hours, I moved into community health and specialist rooms. In 1986, I worked as a community health educator."

"I continued in various nursing roles, before successfully applying to Resthaven in 2003, becoming a Trainer, and later Coordinator, in the Training and Development team (now Workforce Development)."

"In 2012, I became the Preceptor for the Resthaven Graduate Nurse Program."

"Resthaven’s nine-month Graduate Nurse Program supports nurses as they transition from university to a full-time nursing career, with mentoring support, education and guidance."

"Resthaven is unique in offering such a program in the Australian aged care setting."

Richard says, "Julie’s commitment to quality aged care services and her wealth of experience are of great benefit to the next generation of nurses."

"Congratulations on your 50 year milestone, and happy International Nurses Day!"

"We are sure that Florence herself would approve."

International Nurses Day is celebrated on 12 May (the birthday of Florence Nightingale) each year, and celebrates the contribution that nurses make to societies around the world.
