Bethanie Celebrates World Cultural Diversity

on Monday, May 27, 2019

Bethanie, one of Western Australia’s most recognised not-for-profit aged care and retirement living providers spent last week celebrating the cultural diversity amongst their Bethanie on Pier staff, in recognition of their own customer’s diversity.

21 May is officially known asThe World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, and so Bethanie on Pier staff embraced this creating ‘Diversity and Inclusion Week’.

Throughout the week, each department hosted a ‘Build a Cultural Structure’ session which involved building a famous landmark out of items found around the office and being given 15 minutes to study a page of facts about the specific culture - then quizzed on what they learnt.

Bethanie Chief, People, Culture and Brand, Jo Christie comments, “Our workplace celebrates the richness of the different cultures and we encourage mutual understanding and respect. We recognise that our people are central to the culture and success of our business, so we are committed to creating a supportive and compassionate environment for them.

“Events like this continue to develop our culture, embrace and celebrate everyone’s uniqueness and diversity and allow us to have fun in the workplace along the way.”

Monday saw a French and Chinese theme where staff were tasked with building the Eiffel Tower and The Great Wall of China, and on Wednesday staff embraced the Italian and Indian cultures by building the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Taj Mahal. On Thursday, the final day, there was an award ceremony for the best cultural structure and all staff enjoyed an afternoon tea full of tantalising treats from each different culture.

Jo Christie adds, “We live with billions of other people on this earth. We have so much to learn and so much love and understanding to share with one another. This is what our world needs. We don’t need everyone to be a carbon copy of one another.”
