Braemar Pushes Out the Boat to Recognise Volunteers

Braemar Presbyterian Care’s longest serving volunteers were recognised for their dedication and commitment during a volunteer function aboard the 1606 Replica Ship the Duyfken during International Volunteer Day on Wednesday 5 December.

Braemar’s volunteers - who range in age from millennials to seniors in their 80s - were treated to a sundowner on the ship, before being presented with a limited edition 2018 Braemar Coin from the Perth Mint to acknowledge their significant contribution to the not-for-profit aged care organisation over their many years of volunteering.

Braemar Presbyterian Care Chief Executive, Wayne Belcher, OAM, says that, in many ways Braemar’s volunteers were the gems of the community, and that Braemar was very fortunate to have so many passionate individuals willing to go the extra mile for residents.

“Volunteers bring companionship, friendship, joy and social connections to people in residential aged care and are a significant and important part of the lives of those in our care,” he said.

“The coins we are presenting at this event were minted by the Perth Mint as our way to acknowledge the support and contribution of every one of our volunteers, and each and every one of them adds a contribution to Braemar’s ability to deliver Care and Friendship to the elderly in WA.”

Braemar’s volunteers range from young people to retired locals in their 80s and beyond, all of whom contribute to the organisation by, for example, providing companionship, accompanying seniors on outings, presenting musical recitals and even hosting sporting activities.

Braemar’s volunteer program is particularly significant, in the light of a recent ABC News report that across Australia, a significant 40% of residents never receive visitors.
