Applause for Selfless Volunteers at Fronditha Care

on Wednesday, May 23, 2018

Volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure Greek elders never feel alone or feel like they have no one to talk to have been recognised for their service.

The not-for-profit aged care organisation Fronditha Care honoured its 200 strong army of volunteers on May 22 for its annual Volunteers Recognition Ceremony at Merrimu Receptions.

Coinciding with National Volunteer Week, the event showcased the truly selfless nature of many Greek Australians who have devoted their time to the elderly.

“It’s important to note that without volunteers Fronditha Care would not be what it is today,” Fronditha Care CEO George Lekakis said.

Fronditha Care’s President, Nick Thodos acknowledged the unique environment the volunteers foster.
“You make sure the environment in which our residents live in is warm, kind and Greek,” Mr Thodos said.
Volunteers at Fronditha Care come in all ages and contribute in different ways.

They regularly visit the more than 400 residents in five aged care facilities across Melbourne and Newcastle, NSW, while others visit people in their homes.

The volunteers are also not bound exclusively to Fronditha Care and its clients. Many visit the elderly Greeks in other nursing homes or out in the community, and also help with senior citizen activity groups.
Other volunteers fundraise as part of the organisation’s auxiliary groups and even the Board of Directors are volunteers at Fronditha Care.

Fronditha Care’s volunteers are trained and supported by the organisation and have won numerous industry accolades and received recognition from the Victorian Premier and State MPs.

As a special guest speaker at the ceremony on Tuesday 22 May, the City of Newcastle’s Young Citizen of the Year Finalist and Fronditha Care staffer Irini Kassas spoke about how volunteer spirit continues with the younger generation.

A special tribute was also paid to Elly Frangis, a volunteer with over 30 years service and now resident of Fronditha Care’s Clayton South facility.

The ceremony is a gesture of gratitude towards the volunteers for their dedication and sacrifice.
