Seniors and Students Get Set For Season of Goodwill

Christmas festivities are in full swing at Mercy Place Mont Clare, thanks to a group of students at Methodist Ladies’ College who are also experiencing a Week of Amazement. 

The Year 10 students are spending time throughout the week at the not-for-profit aged care home where they are assisting with Christmas craft activities including jam making and biscuit baking, as well as running a day spa to give residents manicures and foot spas.

The Christmas gifts being handmade will also be available as presents for seniors to give to their families and visitors throughout the festive season.

The initiative forms part of the ongoing relationship with Methodist Ladies’ College, which has seen students and seniors form a close relationship during numerous activities during the year, and is part of MLC’s Week of Amazement, where students experience a range of very different activities, from voluntary work to scuba diving and gaining their skippers ticket.

Mercy Health Mont Clare Service Manager, Janelle McFarlane, said residents loved preparing for Christmas, with the help of the enthusiastic teenagers.

“Christmas is a special time and this year is set to be extra special with the help of the MLC students, and the activities they are undertaking with our residents,” she said.  

“We are very thankful to the school as well as all of the students that have volunteered at Mercy Place Mont Clare throughout the year, the relationship we have is very special, particularly to our residents who enjoy the company of the students immensely.”

Methodist Ladies’ College’s Year 10 Week of Amazement 2017 commenced on November 20 and has enabled students to experience a range of horizon-expanding activities and community service programmes. As well as helping Mercy Place Mont Clare seniors to prepare for the festive season, students have volunteered for a number of other charities including the Salvation Army, in addition to living off the land during a Bunbury farm-stay experience.
