Aged Care Residents Find Their Own Rhythm

on Wednesday, April 19, 2017

Aged care facility Regis Shenley Manor has found a musical way to spend mornings with an interactive music session held at the facility on a monthly basis.

The session starts off with the facilitator singing a song and explaining the music’s composition. Then all residents are provided with wooden sticks and encouraged to beat in time with the instructor. He then asks them to create their own rhythm with the main heartbeat being the drum.

“The joy on the faces of the residents and the enthusiasm is awesome to see,” Lifestyle Coordinator Monique commented.

“One particular 100 year old resident participates with the enthusiasm and vigour of a person in their 20s commanding rhythm and expression.”

This class occurs in the morning and the energy that pulsates and fills the room during the one hour session lasts all day. To the delight of residents, staff also get involved and residents have been known to stand up and dance.

Monique says, “They often can’t explain why it happens, they say they just felt like they had to. It is a wonderful, energetic, loud and a fun experience for all.”

Shenley Manor is one of Regis’ Club Services facilities offering premium hotel-style services including permanent, respite, dementia and ageing-in-place care. Additional services offered include aromatherapy, spa therapy, Foxtel, personalised well-being program, private cinema and much more.
