Art Therapy at Regis Brighton

on Tuesday, February 7, 2017

Since beginning in 2014, Regis' Victorian Art Therapy program has enjoyed immense popularity.

Residents in the dementia specific unit at Regis Brighton learn how to improve their concentration through painting mandala circles. The word "mandala" comes from the classic Indian language of Sanskrit, meaning “circle."

Mandala circles are associated with the concepts of wholeness, unity, harmony and the cycle of life. Regis' art therapist emphasises the simple choices when choosing colors as well as assists one-on-one when needed.

The session’s approach imparts unity as residents interact and work at the same table, using the same materials whilst listening to music. This instils a sense of belonging, hope, humor, and self-worth, in a calm atmosphere of respect and compassion.

At the completion of the creative therapy sessions, residents are encouraged to acknowledge what they have accomplished, noting the shapes, colors and how special the experience is as well as the enjoyment from working together as a team.
