Western Australia's Seniors and Youngsters Prepare to Bake Off at Bethanie's Big Event

on Tuesday, November 8, 2016

Bethanie, one of Western Australia’s most well known not-for-profit aged care and retirement living providers, is preparing to fire up the hot plates as some of the state’s oldest and youngest foodies come together in hope of taking out top prize at the Big Bethanie Bake Off.

Returning for a third year, the annual Big Bethanie Bake Off will take place live from Burswood Park at the Seniors Recreational Council of WA’s Have a Go Day, a LiveLighter event, on Wednesday 9 November 2016.
Continuing the aim of closing the intergenerational gap between our seniors and youngsters, the competition will see four finalists from each of the seniors and under 18s categories cook their favourite family recipe, accompanied by a story reflecting the their family’s life, culture and history.

From traditional bush damper to Oma’s special pancakes and everything in between – Bethanie residents, clients, friends, family and staff will join hundreds of Perth’s seniors at the 2016 event. At the Bethanie stand, visitors can enjoy a free sausage sizzle, entertainment, and finalist heats throughout the day before the awarding of the two winners after 1pm.

Bethanie CEO Chris How is looking forward to tasting this year’s finalist’s dishes, saying the competition has proven harder to judge each year. “This year we have selected a group of really passionate cooks with absolutely fascinating stories behind their family recipes. From the aspiring chef Naw Bee Be, who will be making her authentic Thai chicken laska to Aboriginal Elder Marjorie Ugle, cooking her kangaroo patties that have been passed down through generations – it’s definitely not going to be easy to pick a winner.”

“We encourage anyone and everyone to join us on the day – whether you’re an avid foodie or simply want to have fun with a great group of people, the team at Bethanie can’t wait to catch up with you for another great Big Bethanie Bake Off.”
