International Students Perform at Mercy Place Abbotsford

on Tuesday, November 8, 2016

International school students have entertained residents at Mercy Place Abbotsford with a showstopping musical performance.

Students from Marlborough College Malaysia travelled to Melbourne for a six day musical tour in late October and selected Mercy Place Abbotsford for a one hour performance. Marlborough College Malaysia Master Robert Pick and his wife Ali also made the trip to the residential aged care home to mingle with residents and listen to the choir.

Mercy Place Abbotsford Service Manager Karin Woods said the residents loved interacting with the students and listening to their exceptional musical talents.

“Intergenerational relationships are an important part of Mercy Health’s model of aged care,” explained Ms Woods.

“These interactions are remembered by residents long after the event itself and promote important social connections. We embrace any intergenerational opportunity which comes our way including playgroups and school visits.”

Marlborough College was founded in England in 1843 and established a campus in Malaysia four years ago.

The Marlborough College Malaysia choir is made up of 37 students ranging in age from nine to 13 years. Students are from a mixture of different ethnic backgrounds including Singaporean, Malaysian, Turkish, British and Australian.

Head of Prep School Music, Jonathan Ang, said the musical tour of Melbourne included performances at St Paul’s Cathedral and St Francis’ Church in the CBD.

“Our students had a varied and memorable experience during their time in Melbourne,” said Mr Ang.

“On the flight back home the students said performing for Mercy Place Abbotsford residents was one of the trip’s highlights. We would all love to return again one day.”
