Churches of Christ Care Sod Turning Sees Seniors Support Extended

on Thursday, November 3, 2016

The Churches of Christ Care Villa Carramar Aged Care Service in Stanthorpe is set to undergo a $14.5 million extension, with the first sod turned on the development.

Residents from Villa Carramar watched on as the sod was turned using the same shovel that turned the sod on the original construction of the Stanthorpe service.

Chief Executive Officer Dean Phelan said the extension to Villa Carramar marks an exciting step in their strengthening commitment to seniors in Stanthorpe and the Southern Downs region.

“Expanding the service we provide at Stanthorpe was on our radar from when we first looked at purchasing Carramar,” Dean said.

“When the only other provider of aged care in town closed down last year, we knew we had to act, and thankfully we can now commence work towards the provision of an additional 68 aged care places.”

The extension involves the construction of 68 rooms, with the new wings linked to the existing building.

The existing 16-room wing will receive alterations and refurbishment to match the overall development.

The extension has been meticulously planned to suit both the local climate and also the unique needs of locals. It will feature cottage-style accommodation incorporating dementia design principles.

New features include a beautifully landscaped central courtyard, a café and multi-function community space. Pathways throughout the courtyard will lead residents and visitors past themed gardens that reflect the local Stanthorpe character enhanced by water features, garden art and raised garden beds.

“What we are providing here is not only much-needed specialised residential aged care, but also an enhanced sense of community,” Dean said.

“The space within the completed Villa Carramar will help residents stay connected with loved ones, and also participate in a greater range of activities”.

Once completed in early 2018, the Alice Street service will provide care for 106 seniors.
