Villa Maria Catholic Homes welcomes statement on older people

on Thursday, September 15, 2016

Villa Maria Catholic Homes welcomes and applauds the Australian Catholic Bishops’ stand for older people and its recognition of the important role they play in society in their recently released Social Justice Statement.

The Australian Catholic Bishops’ Social Justice Statement for 2016-17 calls on all of us to celebrate the value, dignity and significant contributions of older people to community life.

As an organisation committed to being a leading Catholic provider of high-quality retirement living and aged care services, VMCH looks forward to promoting the message and values outlined in the statement.

“We welcome the Bishops’ emphasis on older people, and the statement’s recognition of the increasing aged population, the role they have to play in Australian life either through employment or engagement at a community level and the need to support them during hardship,” VMCH Acting Chief Executive Officer Michael Dillon said.

“VMCH strives every day to support older people whether they use our community services, live in one of our retirement villages, aged care communities or access our social housing for people on low incomes.”

VMCH Residential Services General Manager, Geraldine Webster, also welcomed the Bishops’ decision to highlight older Australians in this year’s statement.

“It is a privilege to provide care and support to older people in our community and with Australia’s population aged over 65 years expected to double over the next 40 years, the need to offer them compassionate, high-quality support and care is more important than ever before,” she said.

“We will use the Social Justice Statement as guiding principles to support our delivery of care and services.”

VMCH is also proud to be launching the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Social Justice Statement at its own very own St Catherine’s Residential Aged Care, in Balwyn, on Thursday September 15.

Melbourne Auxiliary Bishop, Mark Edwards OMI, will lead a liturgy to celebrate the launch of the statement.

The 2016-2017 Social Justice Statement, titled: ‘A place at the Table: Social Justice in an ageing society’ can be downloaded from the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council website: www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au
