NAIDOC Artist Honours Uniting

on Friday, July 8, 2016

To celebrate NAIDOC week, Uniting Elanora aged care hosted the unveiling of new artwork by this year’s National NAIDOC Poster Competition winner Lani Balzan at a ceremony attended by the Federal Member for Throsby, Stephen Jones MP.

Lani is an Aboriginal woman from the Wiradjuri people of NSW. Her new piece, Together With Sea Country, will complement a mural she painted in 2015 for the front entrance of Uniting Elanora.

The ceremony was also attended by Aboriginal Elders and distinguished members of the local community.

Stephen Jones MP said, "Lani has put together an incredible piece of art work that represents the journeys her ancestors took across the land. It is one of many highlights of NAIDOC week and I was honoured to be invited to the unveiling at Uniting Elanora alongside Aboriginal elders."

"NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for Uniting to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and to reflect on the organisation’s commitment to the Nation’s First People," said Uniting Elanora Service Manager, Walter de Ruyter.

"We’re a vibrant home for older people, and we’re excited to come together to celebrate Aboriginal culture."

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is Songlines. Lani said, "Songlines crisscross east, west, north and south – they are maps of the landscape and represent the relationship between the lands, the sea and the people."
