Teddy Bear Express Visits Frankston Hospital

on Thursday, May 5, 2016

What do you get when you fill a decorated minibus with a group of enthusiast knitters, their keen supporters and dozens and dozens of teddy bears? The BlueCross Karinya Grove’s Teddy Bear Express! The entourage paid a special visit to the Frankston Hospital last week to deliver their collection of gifts.

The teddy bear express was the culmination of Louise Webber’s winning wish in BlueCross Karinya Grove’s ongoing 'win a wish' competition. Louise, 85, has been making teddy bears and soft toys for the young patients at Frankston Hospital for the last three years but had never been there to deliver them.

Last month, Louise, along with her new friends from BlueCross Karinya Grove, made her first trip to the hospital to deliver them in person. Louise moved into Karinya Grove five months ago, and her passion for knitting was quickly evident to staff. She joined in with the other knitters at the residence and recruited them to her cause.  In the last five months they have created 40 bears, teddy bear sleeping bags and blankets.

When staff heard about Louise’s wish, it was an easy one to fulfil.

"It is so great to see the incredible impact that Louise has had on the other residents at Karinya Grove, their dedication to this special cause has inspired us all. We are thrilled to be part of this and we hope that our visit puts a smile on the children’s faces," said Karinya Grove Leisure and Lifestyle Coordinator, Peter Savage.

At Frankston Hospital they group were greeted by staff and escorted to the children’s ward where their gifts were greatly appreciated by the children and their families.
