Let Nurses Lead, Says Health Care Expert from Amana Living

on Thursday, May 12, 2016

The clinical health leader for Amana Living, one of WA’s largest aged care providers, is widening the influence of Registered Nurses and providing leadership training.

While New South Wales is relaxing the requirements for 24/7 Registered Nurses in nursing homes, WA is heading in a different direction. Round-the-clock RNs are not only considered crucial in continuing to meet Accreditation Standards, but they are increasingly taking on clinical leadership roles at Amana Living, one of the state’s largest providers of residential aged care.

“Having a strong Registered Nurse presence in centres for frail older people with high care needs is an important way to manage clinical risk,” says Amana Living General Manager Health Care and Risk, Tim Nayton.

“We have RNs on duty 24 hours a day in our nursing homes and transition care centres, and this won’t change.

“At the same time, we’re building models that ensure RNs take on lead clinical roles, and we’re developing clinical leadership training specifically for them. We already have Staff Development Nurses, who coach, monitor and support all staff involved in clinical care at our residential centres. These nurses are chosen for the role based on their advanced skills and knowledge.”

The organisation is also working on better ways to capitalise on the unique skills that Registered Nurses can provide, to more effectively deliver clinical and care services into the community.
