Benetas Recognises Contribution of Op Shop Volunteers

on Thursday, May 5, 2016

To coincide with National Volunteer Week 9-15 May, leading not-for-profit aged care provider Benetas is acknowledging the efforts of local volunteers at the Corowa Court Op Shop.

The Op Shop volunteers have raised a staggering $1.25 million which will be put towards the organisation’s new development, Benetas Corowa Court Aged Care Apartments in Mornington, set to open in July 2016.

Benetas CEO Sandra Hills said the organisation is incredibly proud and grateful for the hard work and dedication of the op shop volunteers.

“National Volunteer Week gives us the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the commitment, kindness and generosity of our incredible Corowa Court Op Shop volunteers,” said Ms Hills.

“Not only do they donate their time to run the Op Shop and raise funds, many of the volunteers also spend time with residents at our Corowa Court aged care home.”

“We wouldn’t be able to do the work we do without the contribution of our volunteers, even more so this year as we continue to expand our services.”

The Mt Eliza-based Op Shop, which opened in 1963, has a long history of providing funds for renovations, furniture and medical equipment as required by the aged care apartments in Mornington.

Most recently funds have been contributed to Corowa Court’s new state of the art development including the development of a community park available for resident, visitor and public use, new resident furniture, art work, dining furniture and an on-site café.

The Op Shop is made up of 43 incredible volunteers, the oldest being 96 years of age, all of who donate their time to raise money to improve the lives of residents at Corowa Court.

Op Shop President, Bette Wilson, who works every Tuesday, one or two Saturdays per month and other days as required said she was delighted with the Op Shop’s involvement with the new Corowa Court development.

“Our hard working volunteers take pride in the shop and the fact that our shop helps people in need,” said Ms Wilson.

“As an older lady, volunteering keeps me active and well. It’s hard work but I have never regretted it.”

“I like the people I work with and visiting Benetas Corowa Court makes it all worth it.”

The Op Shop has a very loyal and generous customer base who generously donate and purchase a variety of items including clothing, jewellery, china, bric a brac and toys.

This is a significant milestone and Benetas thanks and acknowledges the tremendous work and commitment of the volunteers of the Op Shop.

Benetas will be thanking all of its 400 hardworking volunteers with its annual Volunteer Thank You luncheon, held during National Volunteers Week.

The state of the art Corowa Court redevelopment will see the introduction of apartment-style living designed for smaller groups of residents with their own shared amenities.

This fresh Benetas approach to aged care means residents can make more personal choices and form closer relationships in home-like surroundings.

Residents and family members will also have access to multipurpose rooms that they can use for private functions, a community park and a café as part of the redevelopment.
