Benetas One Wish Delivers Trip of a Lifetime for John 

Victorian not-for-profit aged care provider Benetas has made a once in a life time dream come true for an older person experiencing financial disadvantage, sending him to Croatia to visit his sister for the first time in years. 

The Benetas One Wish program grants special one-off wishes to Benetas clients and residents, which fulfil a lifelong desire or dream.

Originally from Ivanic Grad, John Laverne was born in the former Yugoslavia, and was part of the army from  1956 – 1958 working on border control.

After years of living through war and conflict John decided he wanted a better life.

Upon leaving the army, John left Yugoslavia, left his family behind and came to Australia as a refugee.  

John said he wouldn’t change anything about his life but his one goal was to see his sister who was experiencing  declining health for the last time “before it’s too late”.

Thanks to the Benetas One Wish program, John’s return flights to Zagreb where covered where he spent six wonderful weeks with his sister and family.

John was completely overwhelmed when he was told the news that he was going to be able to see his sister.

“I am so grateful to have this opportunity to spend this time with my sister, I cannot thank you enough,” said Mr Laverne.

Benetas Client Advisor, Linda Crockett, nominated John for the One Wish.

“After speaking with John and hearing his story, I felt it was critical for him to make this final trip to his  hometown and possibly say goodbye to his sister,” said Ms Crockett.  

“I feel extremely proud to have been able to play a part in helping John achieve his One Wish.”

Benetas One Wish is open to all Benetas clients including those living in Benetas’ 13 aged care facilities or in their own home, and aims to provide recipients with access to opportunities that they might not normally have.

Benetas One Wish continues to enjoy the support of residents, their friends and family as well as the wider community including through generous donations.
