Healthy Moments are Catch of the Day

on Thursday, June 18, 2015

The importance of having a positive outlet to spend time with other blokes is on the agenda at MercyCare’s McAuley House in Wembley as part of Men’s Health Week.

The theme of Men’s Health Week, which runs from June 15 to 21, is “moments in time” – the idea that all the little and not-so-little moments in life can add up to make a huge difference in men’s lives.

It’s a theme which resonates in many of the programs at McAuley House, which offers a variety of health and wellbeing-centered activities including gentle exercise classes, and a newly-introduced fishing group which is proving a hit with the centre’s male members.

As part of the fishing group, about six men have been enjoying monthly fishing trips to various boat harbours around Perth where they try their luck fishing with a hand line.

McAuley House Day Centre Coordinator Bettina Philp said the group provided an opportunity for the men to get together outside of their usual environment; to enjoy a chat and a laugh.

“I think the real message of Men’s Health Week is about everyday initiatives we can do to help promote positive health and wellbeing amongst men in the community. For us at McAuley House, that means all the activities we do every day to help encourage people to live active healthy lives, and to foster positive mental health and wellbeing,” she said.

“As people age they can sometimes become isolated or lonely, particularly men who generally speaking, might not be as open as women are when it comes to talking about things.

“Fishing is something you can still enjoy when you don’t have a lot of mobility, as this can be an issue many people face as they get older. Sometimes you can be limited in terms of what you can participate in, but fishing is a fun, social activity which people can sit and enjoy together.

“At McAuley House, we place an emphasis on the ‘Act, Belong, Commit’ message – that’s what it’s all about really: being out there, engaging in the community, interacting with other people forming friendships, and being a part of something; all of which are really important for maintaining positive mental health.”
