Countless Cuppas on Hand at Edgewater Mercy Hostel

on Thursday, May 28, 2015

Countless cuppas will be on hand today at Mercy Health’s Edgewater Mercy Hostel as more than 30 seniors join in the Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser – and in the process raise much needed funds to fight cancer.

And for care staff at Edgewater Mercy Hostel, it hasn’t been hard to stir the residents into action given that everyone agrees a mug of freshly brewed English breakfast, Earl Grey or even camomile warms the cockles during Perth’s cooler autumn days.

Mercy Health WA State Manager, Ms Anita Ghose, says this year’s event will see residents, relatives and volunteers enjoy an extensive morning tea for a very good cause.

“Our residents were really keen to get involved in this year’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea and they don’t need too much persuasion to indulge in a steaming hot cuppa, a delicious morning treat and an opportunity to catch up with friends and family,” Ms Ghose said.

“As well as raising money for a good cause, we believe it’s important to join in with community events and our residents enjoy getting involved; the philosophy of giving is definitely alive and well at Mercy Health and we’re very proud of that.”

Last year, Cancer Council raised over $11.9 million as a result of the fundraiser. This year, the charity is hoping to get more than 36,000 people involved to raise $13 million to fund research, prevention and support services to those affected by cancer.

Mercy Health is a Catholic community not for profit provider of care, founded by the Sisters of Mercy and grounded in a 2000 year history of caring for those in need. The organisation is a national service provider of health and aged care.

In Western Australia, the organisation cares for over 300 people across six residential homes, with 78 independent living units.
