92-Year-Old WWII Fighter Pilot Takes To The Skies Once Again

on Wednesday, May 20, 2015

It's been 70 years since Joy Lofthouse's last flight, but the 92-year-old Air Transport Auxiliary veteran has been given the chance to board a Spitfire for one more trip.

Lofthouse was just one of a small number of female pilots to fly for the British during World War II - she was part of an all-female division known as the 'Attagirls.'

During the war, her job was to shuttle planes from the front lines back to factories for repairs.

To mark the 70th anniversary of the war's end, she was invited to fly in a Spitfire once again - her favourite model of all 18 aircraft she's flown.

After landing, Lofthouse beamed with pride, proving that it is possible to be amazing at any age.

"It's very hard to describe the feeling," she told BBC News. "It almost makes me feel young again."
