Twilight Aged Care & Three Residents Celebrate 100 Years Each

on Friday, March 6, 2015

In a world where the news is often harsh and confronting, it’s nice to read a feel good story about care and longevity. Throughout 2015, Twilight Aged Care is celebrating its Centenary as an aged care provider in Sydney. Highlights include a masked ball in May and the 100th birthdays of three residents.

Special activities are planned in the Homes, including tea parties, reminiscence and recognition of the Anzacs who sailed in the same year that the first Twilight House was opened in Mosman.

Twilight Aged Care was established by volunteers to care for others who were less fortunate and in need of help. Way back in 1912 when the idea of a Twilight Home was first being considered, it was for women, by women.

The Twilight Homes were established for “educated women who had been engaged as professional workers, teachers, musicians, artists, nurses, commercial workers and others” and mostly, the drivers of the Organisation were women ahead of their time; astute, well connected and emancipated.

For many years, the Homes were run by volunteers and relied heavily on donations and bequests and today, volunteers are still an essential part of the Twilight Aged Care circle of care.

Twilight Aged Care CEO John Stuart says, “working in the front line of aged care can be incredibly challenging and, in many ways, aged care has changed beyond recognition over the last 100 years but I am immensely proud that throughout that time, Twilight Aged Care has always put caring for others first and it continues to be the most important thing for us in the services we provide.”
