Queensland provider ahead of the curve on consumer directed care

on Monday, December 8, 2014

The Federal Government’s new model of consumer directed care (CDC) has been scheduled to take effect from July next year, but one Queensland provider is ahead of the curve.

Combining high-end retirement living with the best features of an aged care facility, Tall Trees pioneered their own version of CDC ten years ago, long before the Government even started the conversation.

From its inception, Tall Trees have worked hard to produce a business model that protects, nurtures and encourages the independence and dignity of its residents.

Tall Trees co-founder Phil Usher credits his own mother for steering the vision.

Mr Usher first looked to her for advice and she told him she didn’t want to be bossed around all day. She wanted to retain her independence.

Following similar conversations with the elderly, Tall Trees developed their small collection of tight-knit communities built on the core principles of independence and dignity.

A motto was born that became their mission: if it’s not good enough for our mums and dads, it’s just not good enough.

Mr Usher said he is glad to see the Government catching up to consumer need.

“We set out to provide an alternative to the traditional aged care model and provide our neighbours in the Brisbane and Gold Cast areas with the best living situation we could provide for them,” he said.

“We think we have succeeded far beyond what we had originally hoped for.”

At a morning tea on 10 December at Tall Trees Rochdale, Mr Usher will present on CDC, identifying the various options for seniors under the new system.

Tall Trees Care Communities invites any interested parties to attend, pending availability.
