Sixty-three new beds for Melbourne community

on Tuesday, July 8, 2014

The Mayor of Manningham has welcomed the addition of 63 new aged care beds to the north-eastern community of Melbourne.

Cr Jim Grivokostopoulos officially opened the new wing of Japara’s Millward Aged Care last Friday in the presence of local councillors, industry personnel and the staff, residents and families of the 163-bed home.

The new design boasts several closed courtyards, a private dining room and plush new carpets throughout.

Guests were entertained in the new theatrette, with drinks, cakes and an intricate ice sculpture brought out to celebrate the monumental occasion.

The multi-million dollar development has already brought numerous jobs in planning, construction, building and design. Millward is now employing nurses, carers, chefs, doctors, cleaners and laundry personnel.

Introducing ceremonies, Japara CEO Andrew Sudholz said the economic benefit of the new development would have a flow-on effect.

Mr Sudholz acknowledged the Federal Governement for their changes to the aged care reform, which allowed for the approval of the 63 bed licenses.

“We have an obligation to provide the best healthcare services to the elderly population of Australia,” Mr Sudholz said.

Cr Grivokostopoulos said the Millward development is significant for the homes it will provide and the friendships it will foster.

“Along with the young, the aged are our most valued members of the community,” he said.

“They are our mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers; the very people that nurtured us.

“It is the priority of this council to show ageing as a positive experience.”
