Aged care open day gives providers a chance to engage community

on Tuesday, June 17, 2014

Over 100 aged care providers across the country will open their doors to the public this Friday in celebration of Australia’s inaugural National Open Day.

Australia will join the UK, South Africa and Malta in this year’s tribute to older people and the services available to assist them.

Hosted by industry peak body Aged and Community Services Australia (ACSA), the Open Day is a chance for the local community to pay a visit to their local aged care facility and recognise some of the positive achievements made in the sector.

“Much of the work of aged care service providers is done away from the spotlight and many people have no inkling of what is available, until a crisis hits and they need help for a family member or for themselves,” ACSA CEO Adj Prof Kelly AM writes in his newsletter.

“Australia needs to have a conversation about ageing and this is one way to begin the conversation.”

A smorgasbord of different events are being planned in lead up to Friday, including a multicultural feast, cultural concert, masquerade ball and garden party.

Heeding an overwhelming bid from its residency, ADA Cottage in Kandos will host a Downton Abbey themed high tea on the day.

ADA Cottage personal care assistant Heidi O’Neill said the residents can’t wait to don their best hats and gloves for the occasion.

“We’re in a small rural town and don’t get much exposure, so it’s a great chance for people to come in and see what we do here,” Ms O’Neill said.

In promoting the inspiring lives of older Australians, the Open Day hopes to stimulate growth in the volunteering and employment network of aged care.

In his public endorsement of the event, the Assistant Minister for Social Services Senator Mitch Fifield said aged care services are as integral to the everyday structure of the community as schools and playgrounds.

“The Open Day would be a good opportunity to encourage people to join the aged care workforce,” Senator Fifield said.
