Whiddon Group Recognised for Commitment to Rural Seniors

on Thursday, November 28, 2013

Aged care provider The Whiddon Group has been named a finalist in the 2013 HESTA Aged Care Awards in the Outstanding Organisation category.

The provider has been recognised for its initiatives for rural communities, clients and employees. The Whiddon Group operates in 26 locations including in remote areas Bourke, Wee Waa, Walgett, Narrabri and Condobolin.

Their program ‘Client First’ involves employees making a positive difference in client care and trying to keep people connected to their local community.

“It can be unsettling and distressing for an older person to move away from the community they have lived in for years and this can place stress and strain on family members” explained Whiddon Group CEO Lee-ann Irwin.“For example, one of our remote residential services had a client who had been a drover for his entire working life. He had lived and worked on remote farming stations and slept outdoors under the stars his whole life and wasn’t able to settle or be comfortable sleeping in a bed…To accommodate this, our team arranged the client’s room so that he could sleep on a mattress on the ground, near an open window so he could see the stars. He was more at ease and able to relax” she explained.

The finalists for the Hesta Awards will be flown to Sydney on August 4 for an awards dinner, where the winner will be announced.

Winners of the Outstanding Organisation and Team Innovation awards will each receive $10,000 as a development grand towards their program or initiative.

Other awards include a $5,000 ME Bank Everyday Transaction account and $5,000 towards further education for the Individual Distinction winner.

Aged Care Online would like to congratulate all of the nominees this year!
