Understanding Aged Care: Healthy Brain App Seeks to Reduce Dementia Risk

on Thursday, November 21, 2013

Alzheimer’s Australia and Bupa Health Foundation have released a free app to help people assess their risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

The BrainyApp is free to download for Apple and Android devices and hopes to raise awareness about the risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.

“Dementia doesn’t happen just because someone gets old, it’s caused by brain disease, most commonly Alzheimer’s disease” says Alzheimer’s Australia’s promotional ad for the app.The organisation says that whilst there is no way to guarantee that you will not develop dementia, there are ways to reduce the risk of developing the condition by taking care of your brain health and heart health.

The app allows users to complete Brain Health Survey which asks questions about their lifestyle and health. Users are given a score out of 1600 at the end of the survey, plus three recommendations to improve brain/heart health tailored to their survey results.

The app also provides free access to brain training games and activity ideas which encourage a healthy body and mind.

According to Alzheimer’s Australia there are 267,000 Australians living with dementia and that number is expected to increase to 580,000 in the next 20 years.

The BrainyApp is free to download from Appstores.
