Three Times is a Charm

on Thursday, November 28, 2013

New South Wales and Western Australian Aged Care Provider Hall & Prior have swept up three awards at the Aged Care Accreditation Agency’s Better Practice Awards last week, winning in each category they were nominated in.

“We would have been delighted to win one award” said Hall & Prior’s CEO Graeme Prior, “but to win three awards for three nominations is an honour” he said.

Hall & Prior won awards in the Health and Personal Care category and the Staff Development and Retention category.

Hall & Prior’s aged care facility in Rockingham was awarded for their Palliative Care Program, which demonstrates a proactive and holistic approach to end-of-life care.

The home’s Director of Nursing Linda Marlow said the project had been a passion of hers.

“It’s something that I always aspired to achieve when I came into aged care” she said. “Our staff provide holistic care, treating each resident with dignity and respect and allowing them to live in peace until they die” she explained.

“I wanted to make sure that we looked at end of life care as part of our everyday care, and to take away the fear that some staff have when faced with end of life care” she added.

Windsor Park Care Home was recognised in the Staff Development and Retention category for their Harmonisation Program. The program was created to empower the culturally diverse staff and resident population, with 109 staff representing 22 countries and 114 residents representing 12 nationalities.

The provider’s third award was due to a fire safety education initiative at Leighton Aged Care Home, to create a life-sized mannequin to help staff improve their confidence and knowledge of fire safety methods.

The mannequin, affectionately named ‘Evac Eddie’, addressed the need to make fire safety training accessible and relevant for a culturally diverse staff, by making the exercise visual and hands-on rather than written and academic. The project also allowed the staff to gain practical experience in evacuation procedures without creating a manual handling risk for staff.

“The highlight of the project was seeing an idea come to fruition with the help of our great staff” said Director of Nursing Margaret Tranquille.

“All the staff have embraced the Evac Eddie concept, and there is still more that we are looking forward to achieving with this idea” she said.

Aged Care Online would like to congratulate all of this year’s winners!
