Director of the Respecting Patient Choices Program Associate Professor Professor Bill Silverster from Austin Hospital will present a free aged care forum in Melbourne next week (Wednesday, April 17th) to discuss whether CPR should be performed on aged care residents who are nearing the end of their life.
Professor Silvester will discuss his findings on CPR policies and practises in residential aged care. Professor Silvester surveyed over 400 residential aged care facilities and found that less than 1 in 5 residential aged care staff agreed that CPR should be initiated in the witness of a cardiac arrest. However 4 in 5 of the same respondents said their facility had a policy of providing CPR when the need arose.
Professor Silvester believes there is a massive discrepancy between what staff believe is appropriate for the resident, and what staff actually do when a cardiac arrest occurs.
He will also be addressing the question, should aged care residents be allowed to die naturally?
