New Nutrient Drink to Help Early Stage Alzheimer’s

on Thursday, November 28, 2013

A new multi-nutrient drink which can improve memory function during the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease is now available.

‘Souvenaid’ is a medical drink with a combination of nutrients which have shown to be low in people with early Alzheimer’s disease.

Although the drink is not a cure or a preventative measure for Alzheimer’s disease, the nutrients it contains have been found to aid the brain in terms of learning and memory. The key nutrients include uridine, choline, omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids vitamins and minerals.

Evidence shows that people with early Alzheimer’s disease are shown to have low levels of the above nutrients, compared to healthy individuals around the same age.

Associate Professor Michael Woodward from Austin Hospital in Melbourne, told Australian Ageing Agenda that it was important that Souvenaid only be given to people with a diagnosis or a likelihood of diagnosis of early stage Alzheimer’s disease.

“So when the person has presented to their GP with symptoms and is being investigated for possible Alzheimer’s disease, the GP could start the patient on Souvenaid while they are going through the process of obtaining the diagnosis, which can sometimes take up to six months” he told the magazine.

Further information about the multi-nutrient drink for members of the community and healthcare professionals can be found at Souvenaid’s website.
