Be Aware, Dementia Awareness Week 2013

Alzheimer’s Australia’s Dementia Awareness Week will run more than 20 events across the country next week, to promote awareness of dementia and how to live a brain-healthy lifestyle. Under the theme ‘Brain Health: Making the Connections’ a range of public events will be held from September 16th to the 22nd of September and coincide with World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21st.

 

Events will be hosted in metropolitan and regional areas and many events are free of charge, including a free public lecture ‘Maximising Cognitive Health’ by Dr Kristine Yaffe.  The lecture will discuss the link between chronic disease and dementia as well as lifestyle strategies that can reduce dementia. Events include events aimed at the general public as well as health care professionals.

‘Every day is Alzheimer’s’: Japanese film screening

This film depicts the everyday life of a of a woman whose mother has been a diagnosed Alzheimer’s patient for over two and a half years. Through the world with Alzheimer’s disease, this full-length film poses the question of what a family should be and what the dignity of humans is.

Dementia, Sexuality and GLBTI Inclusive Practice

Alzheimer’s Australia Vic would like to invite you to participate in the Dementia, Sexuality and Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex (GLBTI) Inclusive Practice half-day Forum.

Overall, the Forum will discuss:

  • Intimacy and sexual expression within a residential care setting
  • Introduction of the Sexual Assessment Tool (SexAT) for residential aged care facilities by Dr Michael Bauer
  • The needs of GLBTI carers and clients living with dementia
  • The barriers affecting access to GLBTI inclusive practice and care

This event is suitable for Case Managers, Middle Management, Senior Managers and Allied Health professionals. Also suitable for students (nursing, aged and community care).

The Interface Between Dementia and Depression

Inner South Area Dementia Action Group (ISDAG) is pleased to host a community lecture by Professor Stephen MacFarlane, Director, Aged Psychiatry Service, Caulfield Hospital. Professor MacFarlane will speak on the topic of the interface between dementia and depression.
