Aged Care Industry: More than $50 million in Funding for Ageing Research

on Tuesday, November 19, 2013

The Federal Government will provide $50 million in funding for research into dementia, macular degeneration and other age-related conditions.

The Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler announced that 92 National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) would receive grants last Friday.

Grant allocations include 46 ageing grants totalling $28,152,874, 29 dementia grants totalling $13,247,849 and 17 Parkinson’s disease grants totalling $8,630,990.

“The potential of the projects to help us gain a better understanding of the management of osteoarthritis, and give us more information on the relationship between iron deposits in the brain and Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease for example, is very exciting” he said.

Specific research projects that will benefit from the grant money include $807,822 for Dr Ashley Bush at the University of Melbourne to research the link between the regulation of iron levels in the brain and the development of dementia.

The following week Baptistcare Rockingham protested against the Federal Government’s ageing reforms, alleging that the Federal Government would cut $500 million from residential aged care.
