A free workshop for after-hours provider,s including GPs and residential aged care workers to teach strategies for engaging with individuals with low English proficiency is available from the Centre for Culture, Ethnicity and Health.
The training is open to GPs, residential aged care providers, nurses, practice managers and reception staff to help them develop skills and strategies to communicate effectively with low English proficiency patients.
The training will focus on meeting accreditation standards, skills to better communicate and discuss sensitive and stigmatised issues and how to work with interpreters effectively.Jacqui Pooley, Recruitment and CPD Coordinator from the Melbourne Medical Deputising Service said feedback from GPs had been positive. “It is such an important issue and the doctors really seem to enjoy discussing it during the session” she said.
The workshop will explore how differing health beliefs influence help-seeking practices and how to negotiate health believes with CALD (culturally and linguistically diverse) clients to ensure optimum health outcomes are reached.
