Celebrating a decade at Southern Cross Care SA & NT Sandpiper Lodge

Sandpiper Lodge’s 10th birthday was not just a celebration of time passed - while there was cake and dancing, the event also commemorated former resident Frank Refchange, as the Sandpiper Lodge Community has officially named their chapel after him.

Frank, a proud member of the Knights of the Southern Cross for almost 54 years, has since passed, but he left a strong legacy at Sandpiper Lodge.

The Knights of the Southern Cross support and assist the aged and youth in financial and non financial ways, including assistance with the implementation of projects in the local Catholic parishes.

Frank was involved in planning and advocating for the chapel to be built and at the event Enrolled Nurse Emily Jenkins spoke fondly about his passion for the sacred space to be created.

“Now, thanks to Frank and some that may not have been mentioned, we have a chapel that is a very big part of what the residents look forward to every week,” she said.

“Frank was very passionate about things being just right!”

Southern Cross Care CEO David Moran attended the commemoration and said it was an honour to acknowledge Frank.

“Our thanks are extended to Frank for believing in what he held so dear to his heart so that future residents and staff can enjoy this chapel for many years to come,” he said.

While many gathered to see the unveiling, lots of others participated in other festivities for the Lodge’s 10th birthday.

There was a cake, dancing, performances by the Washington Staff Band and plenty of fun had by all.

Betty Peters, a resident who has been at Sandpiper Lodge since day one, helped blow out the candles and Residential Services Manager Emma Crawford-Chandler said the event was a heartfelt, wonderful day.
