Centaur Memorial Welcomes Light Horse

on Friday, April 28, 2017

To commemorate Anzac Day the 5th Light Horse Regiment, Maleny Troop visited the Centaur Memorial site at Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast to the delight of residents.

The history of the Australian Light Horse dates back to the 1850's with the formation of the Clarence River Lancers in New South Wales.

The Maleny Light Horse Troop strives to keep alive the spirit of the Light Horse by collecting equipment and memorabilia from around the country and attending as many Anzac Day services as possible.

Diversional Therapist Pam Greig said the residents were so excited to see the horses which visit the site every year.

“This morning at breakfast they were all rushing to get outside and find the best seat to see the horses, they absolutely love it,” she said.

“They come twice a year, once for Remembrance Day and Anzac Day and we are so grateful to have them here. You can see their faces light up when the horses arrive

“We have one resident Terry White, a former jockey who stood by the horses for the entirety of their visit. He did not want to leave their side, today is so special for him.”

Inside the community hall, Pam created a moving tribute for her Veteran residents with photographs, poppies, wreaths and storybooks telling of their experiences. Residents enjoyed visiting the hall in the lead up to Anzac Day to pause for quiet reflection.

Many of the items have been donated and archived so they can be enjoyed for years to come.
