Alzheimer's Australia Announces Maree McCabe as New Chief Executive Officer

Maree McCabe was yesterday announced as National Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Alzheimer’s Australia.

Ms McCabe has been Interim National CEO for the last six months and prior to this was the CEO of Alzheimer’s Australia Vic since September 2010.

One of Ms McCabe’s first tasks will be to oversee the unification of Alzheimer’s Australia to a national operating model, due to be in place from 1 July 2017.

Alzheimer’s Australia National President Professor Graeme Samuel AC said, “We are delighted to have Maree take on this role in a permanent capacity during the exciting and challenging process of unification,” Professor Samuel said.

“Maree has demonstrated outstanding work over the past six months in the unification process and the Board and I look forward to working together to bring about these changes in service of people impacted by dementia.”

Ms McCabe said “I am honoured and humbled to be appointed Alzheimer’s Australia National CEO. I am very excited about the future for Alzheimer’s Australia and what we are doing to make a difference for people living with dementia, their carers and families. 

“I am looking forward to working with the Board and my colleagues, consumers and other partners across the county to deliver programs, services and advocacy that improve the quality of life for all people impacted by dementia,” Ms McCabe said.

Prior to commencing at Alzheimer’s Australia Vic in 2010, Ms McCabe worked in senior roles in the mental health and aged care sectors, including Executive Operations for TLC Aged Care, Director of Clinical Resources at The Melbourne Clinic, General Manager of Hospitals for St John of God Healthcare and Surveyor for the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards. Maree has a Post Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing, a Master of Business Administration and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Highlights of her time as Alzheimer’s Australia Vic CEO include the establishment of multi-disciplinary regional hubs; the growth of the use of technology in dementia education and support including the Virtual Dementia ExperienceThe Dementia-Friendly Home app, EDIE (Educational Dementia Immersive Experience) and The Virtual Forest; and the expansion of early intervention services and programs for people living with younger onset dementia and their families, carers and friends. Ms McCabe’s appointment is effective immediately.
