Silver Statues and Golden Age Flash Mob Choir Surprise Adelaide Airport Customers

on Friday, July 29, 2016

Former SA Premier Lynn Arnold and other prominent SA figures went ‘incognito’ as human silver-painted statues as part of a flash mob at Adelaide Airport that was aimed at challenging the community’s mature age stereotypes.

Reverend Arnold was joined by former Department of Transport head, Rod Hook, and travel industry identity, Phil Hoffman, as more than 70 older people erupted into song to create arguably Australia’s oldest singing flash mob.

The project was designed and directed by renowned local artist Andrew Baines – well-known for his ‘suits in the sea’ art installations.

ACH Group Director, Julie Mitchell, says the group is seeking to promote the productive and dynamic contributions of older people employed in positions of influence across South Australia.

“We’re looking to amplify the cause of older people contributing in the workplace and making a difference, regardless of age,” Julie says.

“Our golden oldies have a wealth of knowledge, wisdom and enthusiasm that is being wasted.

“We want to create an exciting world to grow older in today, while ensuring our collective learning and achievements shape a healthy future for everyone.”

The Sing for Joy choir is an inclusive community project for older people funded by ACH Group Foundation that encourages older people to learn to sing and perform to local audiences and as part of a number of festivals in Adelaide. The choirs promote the benefits of participation in the arts by older people and celebrate the contribution that older people and people with dementia can make to the cultural life of South Australia.
