Age No Barrier to Fun and New Friendships at Mercy Place Lathlain

on Tuesday, April 19, 2016

Dancing, singing, fun and laughter could be found in abundance at Mercy Place Lathlain last week when a dozen youngsters from a local dance school entertained seniors during a specially choreographed performance.

The five to 10-year-olds from the Kiddy Groove dance studio entertained the elderly residents with songs, dance routines and a number of jazz performances.

Mercy Health WA State Manager, Ms Anita Ghose, said intergenerational experiences were fun for old and young alike, in addition to helping dispel negative stereotypes of ageing and having a positive effect on both children and seniors.

"Interacting with seniors enables children to develop positive attitudes toward aging, a sense of purpose and a strong community focus,” Ms Ghose said.

“On top of that, there is a very special bond that exists between children and seniors of their grandparent’s generation, and that really shined through during the performance.”

Charmaine Hauptle, Owner of Kiddy Groove, said the children had been rehearsing for weeks prior to the mini-concert and were excited to be performing in front of residents at Mercy Place Lathlain.

“Despite only being as young as four years old, all of the children have loved practising their routines, and it was really beautiful to see them interact so enthusiastically with residents after the performance was over,” she said.
