ACSWA celebrates National Meals on Wheels Day

on Wednesday, August 26, 2015

WA’s peak body for the not-for-profit aged and community sector, Aged and Community Services WA Inc (ACSWA), is joining hundreds of Meals on Wheels providers throughout the State to celebrate National Meals on Wheels Day today.

ACSWA’s CEO Trevor Lovelle will join the City of Bayswater Meals on Wheels team today, helping to deliver meals in the Bayswater community, while other members of the ACSWA team will give a helping hand at Community First Meals on Wheels Palmyra.

Mr Lovelle said National Meals on Wheels Day serves to recognise and pay tribute to all Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers for their ongoing passion and commitment to making a difference each and every day.

“It goes without saying that Meals on Wheels is ‘more than just a meal’,” Mr Lovelle said.

“The relationship and rapport between volunteers and clients goes a long way in improving a person’s wellbeing, not just in nourishing their body but also their soul, a perfect fit for this year’s National Meals on Wheels Day theme - Feels Good…Does Good.

In WA alone, Meals on Wheels providers prepare, cook and deliver more than 590,000 meals to vulnerable people each year.

Within the Perth metropolitan area, Meals on Wheels services assist 2,856 clients each year, while in excess of 2,900 clients find the service invaluable in country WA.

Meals on Wheels providers work closely with other community and health services to promote wellness and encourage clients to engage with their local community. The efforts of the volunteers are a critical ingredient to the program.

Meals on Wheels focuses on three key services to clients:

  • Preparing and delivering nourishing ready-to-eat meals;
  • Providing important social contact for clients who may be isolated and lonely and to assist clients with referrals for other support within their home; and
  • Contributing to the physical and psychological wellbeing of vulnerable people.

Meals on Wheels providers across Western Australia are always looking to recruit new volunteers to contribute just a few hours a fortnight.  Donations are always welcome and any donation of $2 or more is tax deductible.  If you would like to volunteer, make a donation or are seeking your nearest Meals on Wheels provider please visit www.mealsonwheelswa.org.au.
