Tall Trees Care Communities Look at 2020 Vision for Aged Care in Australia

on Tuesday, January 20, 2015

More than 12 years ago, a report called 2020: A Vision for Aged Care in Australia was released by the Myer Foundation. The report highlighted the current state of the aged care industry in Australia and made suggestions for changes to be made by 2020.

Tall Trees Care Communities have recently summarised the 2020 Vision report and added their own extensive insight into the aged care industry.

The Myer Foundation Recommendations in the 2020 Vision report:

In 2002, the Myer Foundation looked at the aged care industry in Australia and suggested a number of changes based on their research – some of which have been adopted and some which haven’t.

They suggested changes in the following five categories:

Community Care:

The 2020 Vision report recommended making it easier for the elderly to receive treatment in their own homes. They suggested that funding needed to be increased across the community care sector, from informal carers to a formal community care program to hospitals.

Housing:

The report suggested that more elderly-friendly housing needed to be built to meet increasing future demand.

Administration:

In the 2020 Vision report, a streamlining of administrative procedures was highly recommended. The Myer Foundation called upon the Government to provide a set of standards and a framework that makes it easier to enforce those standards.

Funding:

Not only does the report suggest an increase in Government funding, but it also recommends that citizens be encouraged to create their own solutions such as reverse mortgages and pre-saving into accounts earmarked for aged care.

Industry Planning:

The 2020 Vision report called on all providers, public, private and not-for-profit, to work together and provide a plan that can be integrated and implemented across all segments of the aged care sector.

Tall Trees Care Communities provide aged care to the Brisbane and Gold Coast areas. Their business model reflects the suggestions made in the 2020 Vision report. Their residents buy homes in the community and then select their own levels of care. This echoes the first suggestion of making it easier for the elderly to receive care in their own homes. Nursing and other care is available 24/7 and can be provided in the residents homes.

The houses provided by Tall Trees Care Communities are built to ensure they are easy for the elderly to live in. They feature open floor plans and the bathrooms are easily accessible and easy to use. Nearly all hazards that cause the elderly to have accidents have been eliminated and replaced by senior-friendly amenities and design.

Phil Usher, co-founder of Tall Trees Care Communities, is proud of how his communities are in alignment with many of the recommendations of the 2020 Vision report.

He says, “In a way, we view the Myer Foundation as kindred spirits. We both want the same things: a high standard of aged care which fosters and protects the independence and dignity of our residents.”
